Buying Reborn Dolls

Reborn Dolls can sometimes go for quite a lot of money and if it is your first time then you may have some concerns. However, there is no need to worry with our handy buying guide that should help you along the way.

Reborn dolls, or "unliving dolls" as they are sometimes called are dolls that have been taken apart, stripped bare and remade with new features. They are then remade through various time consuming processes and idea is to get them looking like real babies.

The end results are usually stunning but like anything else, some are better than others. If the reborn doll seller has photo's listed then you can get a good indication of what the doll looks like. You should be able to tell how lifelike it is from the photos although any individual features will be down to your preference.

You should also consider the coloring of the doll. There are a number of ways to add color onto a reborn doll to make it look real, and generally acryllic paints, oils and even make up are used to do this. The best option though, are genesis heat paints. If the artist states it has been colored with these then you should consider it a good buy. Be aware if the doll has had a 'purple wash' added to the inside of the limbs. This can eventually leak through the doll vinyl which will end up looking bruised so it is not desirable to do this.

New bodies can be used on the dolls to make it feel more real, and these are often made from doe suede. However, the original vinyl body can also be used. It the feel of the doll is important to you then you should consider looking for a remade one. Baby fat pellets, which are used to weight the doll, can sometimes have a bad reaction to vinyl bodies, so if they are mentioned be sure to check they are enclosed in a fabric cloth bag. Be also aware if sand has been used if you require international shipping, as not all countries allow this through customs.

The hair can make a reborn look so much better if done correctly. When wigs have been used they usually look less realistic, but won't come off or cause any problems later on. If the dolls hair has been hand implanted using microrooting techniques then small clumps are applied to the head until it has the desired look. Be sure to check the head photo's to see if you like the look. If there aren't any pictures available then drop the artist an email asking for one.

Finally be sure to check the reborn doll description, as sometimes not everything you see in a photo are included. (clothes, pacifier etc). If you have any doubts or concerns then contact the seller about them who will be able to answer you. Reborn dolls, as collectible items, should last you many years and the price will most likely not drop if you keep it in good condition.
