Ethnic reborn dolls

Ethnic reborn dolls are being created more and more, however there is still a distinct lack of them available for purchase on ebay or anywhere else. It would be a very good thing to see more ethnic reborns around; This is something that will surely change with more and more people taking up reborning. I for one would certainly love to see more ethnic babies created by reborn artists, although I guess a lot of it has to do with demand.

C’mon reborners; let’s see some more ethnic babies please!

If you are considering creating your own ethnic reborn baby then you should look at the ready mixed genesis heat paint sets available for the various skin tones. These sets have been mixed by reborn artists already, meaning that you do not have to practice your mixing to get the right skin tones. This can be quite wasteful unless you are familiar with mixing genesis paints, which will only lead to added cost on your supplies. (If you already have paint mixing experience, but not necassarily reborn making then the same should apply; concentrate on the other skills and techniques first, and you can refine the paint mixing at a later date).

Reborn Dolls: Toys or more?

Reborn dolls have featured in the news and on TV in recent months, and the focal point is where they belong; Are they merely toys, collectors items or are they more than that - can they replace a real baby?

These dolls are certainly not toys; they are not designed for children to play with and although they may be suitable for some ages, the price that the dolls can fetch should be a good indicator that they are more than a plaything. There are many commercial dolls that are better suited for this, that have been through rigourous testing processes to comply with standards. They will also usually come with an age rating, that you wont get with reborns, simply because they are designed for adults.

They are often referred to as unliving dolls, although some artists do their best to make them as lifelike as possible - the latest gadgets appearing in these baby dolls are hearbeat simulators and artifical breating. This can be an attractive addition to potential buyers, although it also makes others stand back and question the concepts; on one extreme there are those that treat the babies as a real offspring while the opposite are those that find the realism ghastly.

The story of Jane, 32, USA

Jane first found reborn dolls after losing her baby of 3 weeks. She tells us “I was devasted after my baby died and i didnt know what i was going to do. While still grieving i found reborn dolls on the internet and immediatly ordered one - to this very day i would not go anywhere without it. She hasnt replaced Amy [her baby that passed away] but I often think of her as her sister.”

The story of Sheila, 28, UK

Sheila tells us that she has 23 reborn dolls in her home, and she likes to change their clothes from time to time and that it brightens her room up. However, she cannot possibly think of them as more than collectible dolls as its not in her nature. Sheila says “I love my reborns but my love only goes as far as someone loves their car, or any other material belonging. Love to another person or child is entirely different”

As a collectible item the price reflects the artistic skill, and techniques involved in making a reborn and its not wonder the rise in populatity is seeing a whole new wave of artists cropping up. This also brings new ideas to the table and improved techniques for creating them. There has recently been a rise in the number of ethnic reborn dolls created which can only be a good thing.

While there is nothing wrong in cherishing a reborn, there are some questions that need to be asked on the psychological factors involved. They are not replacements for children although they are often perceived this way and a TV program in the UK (channel 4) touched upon this by getting into the lives of women who did this. They wold often take the reborn out in prams, and carry them around wherever they went. Sadly, the program did not touch upon why the women did this, and what made them so attached to the doll.

A relative of mine has several reborn dolls now, and each one has a name, a history and their own reborn birth certificate. However, the line is drawn there and the dolls are never taken outside, or even moved from the room she keeps them in. There is no harm in this, but its only slightly less of an extreme. She says its because her children have grown up, and being on her own can get lonely. When she looks in the room of these dolls, she is reminded of all the family moments she cherishes and it always puts a smile on her face.

Please contact us if you carry your reborn doll around, and are willing to explain why you do this, perhaps you lost a child and this is a constant memory dedicated to him/her? or maybe you find them so adorable you cant help it?

Reborn Mohair and wigs

When you are making your own reborn doll, the hair is one of the most tedious parts to complete. You can shortcut this by using a ready made wig. However, in most cases the final effect is not as good as when using mohair.

The term used for fitting mohair onto a reborn doll is known as microrooting.

X-acto knives for reborn dolls

The X-acto knife brand has been around for more than 50 years and has always been held highly in the minds of artists and sculptors that have insisted on high quality accessories to aid them. X-acto blades are made from only the finest steel. There is a wide variety of knives and blades available that will meet almost any cutting need. Most are suitable for creating reborn dolls, although you might want to invest in a couple of knives, so have a selection of sizes handy for finer jobs, to the larger work. Be sure to check the knife specifications for compatible blades.

The way the X-acto knives are created make them easy to grip and comfortable to sit in your hand. This makes them ideal for time consuming jobs where other knives may start to hurt. You also don’t find yourself having to juggle the knife around to make it comfortable which can lead to mistakes.

Some of the knives have push button retractable stainless steel blades while others are manual sliders. This is a nice addition but isnt really a time saving device and doesn’t make it any more practicle when reborning.

If you have small children, you might want to consider buying a knife that comes with a blade guard that will stop them playing with it. If they see you sculpting, they are likely to think its a toy that they can use too, and while we all like to think we are careful parents, it only takes the turn of your head before it can be whisked away by little hands. The knife guard will make sure no harm can come to the curious youngster.

If you have never used an X-acto knife before, you might not want to rush straight into the reborning process. Consider practising cutting shapes on hard paper, or thick cardboard first as it is very easy to apply too much pressure and this may ruin the reborn doll, or reborn kit you have purchased. It doesn’t take long to get the feel for it though, so you shouldn’t be too concerned about this.

If you are on a tight budget, it is highly recommend you try and stretch this to buy an X-acto knife for reborning; most of the competition are not nearly as good and for once the quality is instantly obvious on them. They are generally quite cheap and if you keep an eye on X-acto knives on ebay there are many bargains to be picked up.

Ebay is one of the largest merchants on the internet. When you signup to ebay you open up a whole new world of shopping - its one of the only places you are likely to find some of the most sought after collectibles in the world.

Most of the items are priced fairly, and once in a while you will be able to pickup a true bargain; reborn dolls are no exception. If the real life baby doll you are after does not have a buy it now option, then consider placing a bid anyway - items are often overlooked or forgotten about and you will be surprised how many items get sold without getting into a bidding war.

If you are luckily enough to buy something from ebay, then you can also be assured that your transaction has been tracked, giving you, and the seller added security. You can choose to pay through a number of methods, including paypal. Most listed items are protected with a money back guarantee when paying with paypal, so if you do not receive the goods as advertised, you can claim your money back. This hardly ever happens though, and you can check the reputation of the seller before placing a bid.

Discussions on Reborn Dolls

We had a big discussion on reborn dolls at a family gathering a while back, and there were even numbers sitting on either side of the fence.

The main point of discussion was wether or not reborns are more than a toy. For some women, they can fill a void left from some unhappy news, or a family death and it takes the focus and pain away from it all. For others, they are glances back on memories of their children. They are certainly far more than a toy, and are not really designed for children to play with. They should be kept away from children if possible, as there are more suitable alternatives for them. The main difference between the reborn babies and other dolls is their similarity with real babies. No one can easily find any difference in the appearance, size, open nostrils, fingers, nails, or eyes, between a lifelike doll and an original baby. Even weight of the baby is same to that of original baby. Usually, the dress of the dolls is right with the current trend with all baby outfits although these can be changed pretty quickly with a variety of reborn baby clothes on offer.

We also discussed some of the prices that reborn dolls go for, and while I agree they can often be expensive, I dont think they are priced to simply make money; the amount of work that goes into creating a doll is very time consuming and the techniques can be fiddly and troublesome. To create the features that some of the dolls have are worth every penny, and when you see one of these reborn babies you will know what I mean.

The final point in the discussion on reborns was regarding their status as collectors pieces. Once again, I see this as no different to, say, grandpa collecting this trains, my brother collecting video games, or uncle and his radio controlled cars. Reborn doll collecting is the next (bigger) step from dolls houses and is attractive to those that may have been brought up around them.

I dont see any of this as contraversial, but its a pity that others can’t see the beauty of reborn dolls. Next time, I will have to take some samples round for them to see! I’m sure that will change a few opinions.

Do you have a family like this? Have you had discussions on reborns with them, or with friends and collegues? If you have any comments, let me know - i’ll add any interesting points to this page.

What is a reborn doll

A reborn doll is a baby doll that has been disassembled and recreated by the artist to resemble an actual human baby. This is usually called reborning. This is something that has been around for a while and its popularity has spread around the world over the past few years. They are sometimes also referred to as unliving dolls.

A lot of hard work are put into making reborn dolls, and as you can imagine, many hours too. Every minute detail must be researched to make sure it can be applied to the doll and make it as lifelike as possible. The results are often breathtaking. Its no wonder these dolls aren’t really designed for children to play with.

There has been a lot of development on the realism of these dolls over the past 5 years. It is not uncommon to buy a doll nowadays with a simulated heart beat or battery powered breathing. Even the weight of the baby feels lifelike as it gets padded with fine sands when the doll is put back together.

The idea of a doll that looks real is not a new – childrens dolls in the 1980s and 1990s came with diapers that needed changing after you fed it, and also cried and made laughing sounds. However, these did not come close to looking as real as the reborn dolls.

Some people buy these dolls as collectors items, and due to the uniqueness of each baby is no wonder why. Others buy the doll as a replacement to a lost baby and it can be a comforting and inexpensive hobby to have. (This was also featured on a documentary in the UK on channel 4).

There has been a lot of media coverage on reborn babies - some not as serious as others however. In July 2008, police in Australia smashed a car window to rescue what they thought was a baby laying unconscious. You can imagine how they felt after they realised it was a reborn doll, but this is a sign of how realistic the dolls can be. Many of the bystanders were afraid the baby was actually dead! A similar incident also occured in America the year before.
