Using acrylic paints on reborn dolls

It is possible to use acrylic paints on reborn dolls. If you are deciding on the best method to paint and color your reborn, then you should first look at the Genesis heat paint sets available.

If you are still looking at using acrylics then you should first be aware that these paints go a long, long way, so you do not need to pile on paint thickly, or you will end up with a clown! Some paints may need thinning to get your desired consistancy, and if you are unsure you should get a practive reborn doll first to test the technique. Safflower oil is ideal to thin paints, as other oils can discolor overtime. Do not think about using baby oil as this will spoil over time. Other concerns on using these paints on reborns is the purple wash on the inside.

You only need to use a little oil mixed with the paint, and apply it with a makeup sponge. First, get a little of the paint onto a palette, or you could use small plastic pots or plates. If you need to mix the paint for a different shade, then do this as well by adding a little of the other color(s) as required. Once done, add the safflower oil as required, you should add this drop by drop until at a creamy paste like thickness. For shading and blusing you may need to add more oil, as the colors are more vidid that skine tone and body colors. You shouldnt use too much as it may spoil the paint and will take longer to dry with oil in it.

Remember, you are trying to add a tint to the doll frame, not paint it completely like it was a window frame!

When you have applied the paints, dont forget to allow time for the paint to cure. This is important and is often missed out. When the paint is dried, expect to wait another 2-3 weeks before it is ready. When the paint is dry, it will then blend and soak in with the vinyl and other paints and oils so you may notice small color changes, which is normal. If you notice a problem, dont be afraid to touch it up with some more paint, but be prepared to leave it longer once completed.

It is a must to apply some sealer on the reborn once the paint is dried AND cured. The sealer will stop the color from bleeding, or running of the paints. This will lock the colors in, and you should have some spare if you used any on the lips or finger/toenails.
