The realism achieved on reborn dolls is part of their global attraction. There are a number of reasons why they can look so real but painting is one of the most important, and sometimes the hardest to get right. Every artist has their own technique when painting a reborn doll and can use numerous supplies to achieve different effects. The video below is an example of one method of painting a reborn baby.

What is a reborn doll

A reborn doll is a baby doll that has been disassembled and recreated by the artist to resemble an actual human baby. This is usually called reborning. This is something that has been around for a while and its popularity has spread around the world over the past few years. They are sometimes also referred to as unliving dolls.

A lot of hard work are put into making reborn dolls, and as you can imagine, many hours too. Every minute detail must be researched to make sure it can be applied to the doll and make it as lifelike as possible. The results are often breathtaking. Its no wonder these dolls aren’t really designed for children to play with.

There has been a lot of development on the realism of these dolls over the past 5 years. It is not uncommon to buy a doll nowadays with a simulated heart beat or battery powered breathing. Even the weight of the baby feels lifelike as it gets padded with fine sands when the doll is put back together.

The idea of a doll that looks real is not a new – childrens dolls in the 1980s and 1990s came with diapers that needed changing after you fed it, and also cried and made laughing sounds. However, these did not come close to looking as real as the reborn dolls.

Some people buy these dolls as collectors items, and due to the uniqueness of each baby is no wonder why. Others buy the doll as a replacement to a lost baby and it can be a comforting and inexpensive hobby to have. (This was also featured on a documentary in the UK on channel 4).

There has been a lot of media coverage on reborn babies - some not as serious as others however. In July 2008, police in Australia smashed a car window to rescue what they thought was a baby laying unconscious. You can imagine how they felt after they realised it was a reborn doll, but this is a sign of how realistic the dolls can be. Many of the bystanders were afraid the baby was actually dead! A similar incident also occured in America the year before.
